MFA Thesis: Effective Gamification of Education

Thesis Statement

A clear definition of successful gamification of education allows the development of a set of guidelines to enable designers and educators to use game mechanics to solve problems and engage audiences; a modular game system will be produced to support the implementation of gamification of education.

Abstract

The idea of gamifying education is nothing new.  What has been missing however is a set of guidelines for successful gamification of education that will enable designers and educators to use game mechanics to solve problems and engage audiences.  This set of guidelines will be built around a clear and concise definition of gamification of education.

My thesis will be proven by the creation of a modular game system with both a web and non-digital component.  The core module will be the reward, achievement and character attribute systems.  This information will be stored and modified through a web based game interface.  The game can be expanded through the addition of modules; these modules can be “subject modules” for specific subjects and “system modules” for additional games systems.  Besides creating the core module, I will also be designing 2 interdisciplinary subject module for students in the 8th to 12th grade range and a system module that allows for group competition through the addition of guilds.

Thesis Goals

1.  Develop a clear and concise definition of what successful gamification of education is.

2.  Develop a set of guidelines based off of this definition that will enable designers and educators to use game mechanics to solve problems and engage audiences.

3.  Develop a modular game system with both a non-digital and web based component that will support the implementation of gamification of education.
